Melissa Huff :
I was the Director of Facilities Services at a Private Christian University (think extremely spoiled, wealthy kids… that came from families like the “large” ones on TLC). The newest dorm was for Seniors, and the kitchen was top of the line and had a double “trash drawer” that the kids would pack so full it would overflow and get trash juice everywhere… all because they were so incredibly lazy and entitled, they didn’t want to carry their trash to the dumpster that was a whopping 20 yards away from the entrance. They thought the custodial team was their personal servants. The deal was, IF they used the kitchen THEY were responsible for cleaning up the kitchen and taking their trash to the dumpster. Somehow, the Resident Directors, parents, and students came up with the idea “Just put a work order in complaining about the smell and amount of trash, and custodial will have to take care of it!” I got so tired of the work orders and emails from parents trying to put more work on my team… I threw a roll of trash bags on the counter, took the cans with me, then put in a work order to “take the trash drawer” out… which was broken within the first two weeks after move-in. Maintenance bought internal cabinet latches that made the drawer no longer open. When the students tried to pull it open, it wouldn’t budge. They complained to the RDs. I popped up and said “Look, none of you take care of the gifts you were given. You can thank those that abused it, because they lost it for all of you! Custodial is here to stock and clean your restrooms and showers, not play your mother and clean up after you. College is preparing you for the real world… and the majority of you will NOT have people cleaning up after you. So, you better start doing it yourself NOW! Otherwise, you won’t know how to live in anything but squalor!” They complained to the VP over the Physical Plant… he took my side and told them he was taking the “game room” away also. That they had broke lights throwing basketballs at them, ripped the PlayStation 5 off the wall, and somehow broke the pool table slate. Keep in mind this was all within about a month and a half of the dorm opening… and these were SENIORS!!
