I kind of disagree with your points! I think the corporate greed/CEO was a side plot (that was integral to Jesse’s character) but the point I walked away with was that conspiracy leads to nowhere. He was 100% correct in his beliefs and yet everyone in his life died. Conspiracists spend their lives dedicated to revealing the “truth” with no means of envisioning the future after the reveal. Loved the modern CEO plotline though-the original Korean movie had Emma stone’s character as a man and had a weird police investigation side plot that took away from the solidity of the remake. Thanks for sharing though!

But Jesse Plemons character wasn’t correct about everything- to the point where his confidence in his beliefs leads his mom dying. I also don’t think it makes much of a difference to the average person whether or not any tech ceo is an alien irl- they treat us like experiments and are indifferent to our survival just like an alien and I think that was the point. They don’t care about us. For me, at least the ending montage was like an ode all we have to lose by losing our own humanity in an effort to “save the world” and for me at least- it stuck the landing.

The thing is - if Jesse plemons character had been more kind to Emma stone’s character - she might’ve chose to save earth. I interpreted it as saying that if humans are in this never ending cycle of vengeance, they create their own demise. So even though he might’ve been “right,” he didn’t need to be as cruel be was. And this is ultimately why it ends the way it does. It’s saying we need to be better humans essentially

it’s a story about power vs the powerless. who decides what is right or wrong? it’s different for everyone, but power dynamics affect everyone. (E.g. aliens vs humans, ceo vs employees, kidnapper vs kidnapped, humans vs bees, the cop babysitter and the kid, queen alien vs regular aliens)

Haven't seen it yet, but besides nihilistically precluding any sort of way out from things, there might be reading it as "who are we in the eyes of an alien?", maybe to show the horror of our position itself rather than putting the blame on misanthropy, etc. A cosmic guilt that's a call to action?

I agree for sure. It seems like they wanted to make Emma’s character a snobby billionaire type, so I was confused when it was revealed they were trying to help (the aliens). What is the director trying to say with this? That conspiracy theorists should stop critiquing billionaires because they’re just trying to help? Because that’s far from the truth.

i actually really liked that they made her an alien after all. she is inhuman and lives in a different world from the rest of us, much like the ultra-rich are. i get your point about the scary element of these people being the fact that they are human, but i think it works as a satirical parallel regardless due to the core similarities

I didn’t take the ending monologue from Emma’s character so literal. It definitely plays with the audience using Jesse’s character especially when the revel happens. But another way to interpret the ending is that we the people know what the problem is but are unable to take the necessary steps to defeat it. Emma stone is able to sow doubt in Jesse’s character and in the end these “people” literally not human would rather destroy humanity than be defeated.

imo the purpose of Emma Stone’s character being an alien is to emphasize the class and cultural divide between CEOs and ordinary people. They are, genuinely, not like us. But at the same time, they aren’t evil or bloodthirsty or sinister. Stone’s character spends years of her life on Earth trying to help humanity. She lives an isolated existence and focuses on her work (similar to Plemons’ character). Jesse understands that aliens are real but he projects all of his pain and misery onto the aliens when sources around him (the cop, for example) are just as responsible for his suffering

After watching i respectfully disagree. I think the point isn’t who is being exploited, but how power justifies itself. If she were simply another human, the system could still pretend there was shared ground being ignored, a moral failure that might be corrected. By making her alien, the film removes that comfort. It shows how easily difference becomes permission, how quickly empathy collapses once someone is categorized as "not us".

i think jesse plemons was correct but he was also focusing his attention on the wrong things. instead of focusing on the fact that he's in his situation because of late stage capitalism, he blames it on aliens. ik emma stone is the reason for his troubles, but she herself says "the more time i spent with humans the more evil i became." she isn't evil because she's an alien, rather she's originally supposed to help but warped by human interests. i think the movie doesn't blame individuals - i take the ending as a "this is what the world would be like at the latest stage of unfettered capitalism."
