MOHELA, Nelnet, Aidvantage — these are third party companies contracted to handle billing and paperwork. They are not the Department of Education. They do not set policy. And right now their customer service representatives are working from outdated scripts and giving out information that is actively costing borrowers qualifying PSLF payments. Here is what you need to know. Your loan servicer does not have to give you permission to switch plans. You do not have to wait for their call or their letter. You can go to studentaid.gov right now — which IS the Department of Education — and apply for IBR or RAP today. Studentaid.gov is your source of truth. Not your servicer’s portal.
