Riley is clean. He’s fed. He’s cosy. The room is dark. Everything is ready. And instead of feeling relieved that I can finally go to bed, I find myself wondering… How many times will I wake up tonight? Will he sleep for an hour? Two hours? Will I even make it through a full sleep cycle before I’m awake again? After enough broken nights, you start going to bed already exhausted by the thought of being exhausted. I hate admitting that. Because bedtime is supposed to feel peaceful. It’s supposed to be the end of the day. But when you’ve had a lot of difficult nights, sometimes your body remembers them before your brain has even caught up. And then I started looking at the little lights. Mums everywhere getting ready for their own nights. Mums who know exactly what it’s like to go to bed hoping for sleep while also knowing your baby might wake you again in an hour. Mums who are feeding, rocking, settling and comforting. Mums who are probably lying there wondering the exact same thing. “How are we going to do this again tonight?” And suddenly I don’t feel quite so strange for feeling anxious about it. I don’t feel like I’m the only one. I don’t feel like everyone else has figured out something I haven’t. I just feel like a mum. A tired mum. A mum who loves her baby more than anything and sometimes wishes motherhood came with a little more sleep. So tonight, I’m going to try not to predict how the night will go. I’m going to take it one wake up at a time. And if I’m awake at 2am, I’ll know I’m not the only one. There will be little lights on all over the world. Mums loving their babies through the dark. And somehow, that makes the night feel a little softer. 💛 #newmom #momlife #postpartum #motherhood #momcommunity
