This is exactly how mine works. Heat pump works until it’s too cold to keep up and like you said if the temp drops 2° lower than setting on thermostat the emergency heat strips kick on… and so does the electric meter lmao. Talk about running up a bill 💸

Mine and all my neighbors you have to actually turn on emergency heat manually, it doesn’t just switch on when it’s too cold outside

Is it bad when auxiliary heat kicks on? I'm staying with my sister and it's real cold here in Wilmington NC. Yesterday the auxiliary heat kicked on and she was so upset thinking it's bad when that happens. I don't think it's bad but she didn't want to hear it. And it wasn't about it being more expensive.

Indiana here, we have a heat pump and when it’s 10* our heat pump can’t keep up, the outside unit just runs. We manually turn on the emergency heat and then the house warns and stays warm. Indiana heat pumps are worthless

I have a carrier unit with Puron when it gets cold the auxiliary comes on automatically to help out heating once it gets below 20 I can turn on emergency heat which fires up the second coil but that is done manually only

Mine is not automatic. I have to switch it to emergency heat when it gets 36 and lower.

Me arguing with my husband just last week to stop running the heat strips. 😂🤦🏼♀️and then having to go and show him what I mean. Mine comes on at plus 3* so I never bump it more than 2, because it’s not that cold in here.

When you have a generator hooked up to the house that's not powerful enough to run the heat pump, turn it on. But make sure the 50 amp breaker for the heat pump is off.

that emergency heat ran up our light bill from about 90$ a month to over 330$ found out the unit outside wasn't working properly.
