@reformedacres: Let's talk about wire cages for meat rabbits, and why this is the best option for them & us :) a couple things to get out of the way...these are meat rabbits, not pets. That doesn't mean that I don't care about them or don't want them to be healthy with a good quality of life. But it does mean that they are livestock and aren't given toys or a carpeted room to run around in like someone might do with a pet rabbit. Next, I'm a pregnant mom with 3 boys currently 5 and under. When it comes to farming, my policy is that we always prioritize health and safety of the animal and then find where that intersects with what I (as the primary farmer) can sustain day to day. And I think that's a good rule of thumb for anyone in homesteading. Okay, so why wire cages? Rabbits are prone to disease, so one of the best and easiest ways to combat that is with a wire cage where their waste falls right through. Their feet are padded and perfect for handling this type of thick sturdy wire used, but we also have resting pads if they choose to use them (which often they don't.) A cage on the grass would present opportunities for them to eat grass that has been contaminated by their feces + to dig out to be eaten by predators. You could put wire on the bottom, but that doesn't solve the issue of the waste + bacteria from the ground. They aren't upright like chickens. They move and lay with their whole body on the ground. They aren't housed together because they are very territorial and would be fighting and hurting each other often, or the does would be in a near constant state of pregnancy...which isn't healthy. Therefore, this setup is the best way for me to ensure the health, safety, and well-being of the rabbits as we raise them to feed our family. I'm happy to answer any other questions I may have missed covering! 🐰 . . #meatrabbits #rabbithutch #raiseyourownfood #homesteadlife #backyardfarm

meat rabbits originated in Europe bred to live in cages. they are not like the typical pet rabbit breed. they don't require the space or being on the ground. being on the ground stresses them because they are a prey animal.

i hope those cages are bigger than they look.. even meat rabbits need proper living conditions. Those are not kept with their wellbeing in mind.

rabbits will typically eat one set of their poop so that they get proper nutrition. how do you go about them accomplishing this with the wire cages.
