Abdul Haq had powerful friends in Washington. But when the Taliban captured him, even they could not save his life. A celebrated Afghan Mujahideen commander who fought the Soviets, Haq maintained close relationships with influential Americans, including former US National Security Adviser Robert McFarlane, diplomat Peter Tomsen and wealthy businessman James Ritchie. In October 2001, Haq secretly entered Taliban-controlled Afghanistan, hoping to persuade commanders and tribal leaders to abandon the Taliban. But his mission went disastrously wrong. Taliban fighters surrounded his small group near Logar. Desperate calls for help reached his American contacts, who appealed to Washington. The CIA reportedly deployed an armed Predator drone to attack Taliban forces, but the intervention failed. On 26 October 2001, Abdul Haq was captured and executed by the Taliban, alongside two companions. His death triggered accusations that Washington had abandoned an important Afghan ally. US intelligence officials disputed the criticism, insisting Haq had undertaken the dangerous mission despite warnings. He had friends with access to the highest levels of American power.
