A foreign national was told to close his salon and tuck shop because, in their words, these businesses are meant for South Africans. But the man they shut down actually employs more than 30 South Africans, so closing him didn’t free up a business for locals, it just put 30 South Africans out of work. He had been operating for 13 years with legal documents and was paying his taxes, yet they closed him anyway and insisted a South African must run the shop. It’s hard to understand how taking away 30 people’s jobs is meant to protect South African jobs, which makes you wonder what this was ever really about.
