My lawyer said we had of filed taxes together to be considered common law married. Everything else didn’t matter. Kids. Together for 10 years. Lived together for 8-9years. Etc so I didnt have to file for divorce cuz I wasn’t considered legally married to him. Just had to do the custody for the kids.

Auntie 🩵 :
for those who are saying he's wrong. This is for Ontario. In Ontario, "common law" (or conjugal relationship) means you live with someone like a married couple for at least 3 years, or for 1 year if you have a child together, but without being legally married, granting specific rights for spousal support, parental issues, and some tax/benefit purposes, though property division differs significantly from marriage and often requires proving contributions or "unjust enrichment" to claim assets.
