1968 — Paul Mauriat • Love Is Blue There are songs that need words to tell a story, and then there is Love Is Blue. Paul Mauriat's breathtaking instrumental version turned a Eurovision song into one of the biggest international recordings of 1968. The melody was composed by French composer André Popp, with lyrics by Pierre Cour. The original song, L'Amour est bleu, was performed by 17-year-old Vicky Leandros for Luxembourg at the 1967 Eurovision Song Contest in Vienna, where it finished fourth. Paul Mauriat heard something special in the composition and transformed it into an entirely instrumental orchestral arrangement. His recording featured lush strings, horns and the distinctive harpsichord sound that became one of the recording's signatures. Then something extraordinary happened.
