Warner Bros. picked July 21 for Barbie years earlier, Universal locked Oppenheimer into the same date not long after, and neither studio blinked. What should've been a scheduling disaster turned into the biggest shared moviegoing event of the decade. Barbie closed at $1.4 billion and finished as the highest grossing film of 2023. Oppenheimer hit $975 million and briefly held the record for highest grossing biopic ever, before Michael quietly took that crown earlier this year. Still sits at number two all time, which for a three hour R rated film about nuclear physics is genuinely insane. Nothing since has come close to that specific kind of chaos. Feels less like a coincidence now and more like the last time the whole internet agreed on something at the same time.
