How to Suspect Typhoid, Malaria & Dengue from CBC, Step by Step Step 1: Check WBC count. First look at the total white blood cell count. In typhoid, WBC may be low or normal, sometimes with relative lymphocytosis. In malaria, WBC may be low or normal. In dengue, leukopenia, or a low WBC count, is common. Step 2: Check platelet count. However, these patterns overlap with many other infections. Step 6: Confirm with specific tests. CBC is only a screening clue. Typhoid: blood culture is preferred. Malaria: peripheral blood smear or a malaria rapid diagnostic test. Dengue: NS1 antigen or PCR during the early phase, and IgM later in the illness. Important: Never diagnose typhoid, malaria, or dengue from CBC alone.
