It means our past no longer gets to define who we are. 🩷 “But ye are washed…” 🌸 Then comes one of the most beautiful words in the verse: 🦋 BUT. 🦋 You were this… but God did something. 🌸 To be washed speaks of cleansing. Sin stains our lives in ways we cannot cleanse ourselves, but through Christ we are made clean. 🌸 We don't have to spend the rest of our lives trying to scrub away yesterday's failures. 🌸 Jesus cleanses what we could never clean ourselves. 🩷 “But ye are sanctified…” 🌸 To be sanctified means to be set apart for God. 🌸 Being Made New isn't only about what God removes from us. It's also about what He sets us apart for. 🌸 We belong to Him now. 🌸 And because we belong to Him, He continues working in us—changing our desires, correcting our attitudes, teaching us obedience, and gradually making our lives reflect Christ. 🌸 Sanctification reminds us that being Made New is both an identity and an ongoing transformation. 🌸 God isn't finished with us yet. 🩷 “But ye are justified…” 🌸 To be justified means that through Christ we are declared righteous before God. 🌸 This doesn't mean we earned righteousness by becoming good enough. 🌸 It means Jesus did for us what we could never do for ourselves. 🦋 Our sins don't get the final word. 🦋 Our worst moment doesn't get the final word. 🦋 Our failures don't get the final word. 🦋 Jesus does. 🩷 “In the name of the Lord Jesus…” 🌸 And once again, the center of being Made New is Jesus. 🌸 Paul doesn't say: 🦋 You fixed yourself. 🦋 You finally became worthy. 🦋 You worked hard enough. 🌸 He says they were washed, sanctified, and justified “in the name of the Lord Jesus, and by the Spirit of our God.” 🌸 Transformation begins with what God does, not with our ability to reinvent ourselves. 🩷 This verse gives us such a beautiful before-and-after picture: 🌸 You WERE… 🌸 BUT… 🦋 You are washed. 🦋 You are sanctified. 🦋 You are justified. 🌸 That little word “were” carries so much hope. 🌸 Whatever your past contains, Christ can put it in the past tense. 🌸 Being Made New doesn't mean your story disappears. It means Jesus changes what your story means and where it goes from here. 🦋 Your past can become testimony. 🦋 Your shame can give way to grace. 🦋 Your old identity can give way to who you are in Christ. 🩷 Being Made New means we are no longer defined by what we once were.
