As overwhelming as it may sound I think it’s wonderful that they enforced that , you seem to have turned out amazing so it’s like

I’m going to be honest this is only worth it if you got a full ride to college? Did you get a full ride to NYU?

I think it can be very unhealthy to instill in a child that grades are everything. I’ll never forget this girl in elementary school breaking down cause she didn’t have perfect grades and knew her mom would be mad. ELEMENTARY SCHOOL. Now don’t get me wrong, I think many kids do need academic oversight, but I was a very self motivated child in school. No one ever had to tell me to get good grades or do my work. My mom was always proud of my grades, but if I ever got a B or something it literally never mattered bc she knew I tried. In college, she didn’t ask about my grades once bc she knew I was doing fine and that grades are not the most important thing in the world. Like I never felt any pressure that didn’t stem from my own wanting to do well in school and I think that was such a gift.

It honestly doesn’t matter that you have a 4.0, college know grade inflation exist, and there many other things that are more important than your gpa in college admission, just enjoy high school and get a decent gpa

Does you dad generate straight up perfection? Btw, my slacker son is at a top 10 hedge fund. He had to get thru on campus interview where the guy told him to rip up his transcript as it meant nothing to him. No one has ever asked him for a gpa since that day. He was 19.

While I feel like this was a very effective standard and program for your parents to enforce to build work ethic and ensure success and drive academically, I also feel like these standards do really effect how you grow up and also how much you value “intelligence” to the point that it builds up toxic ideologies that because you have that drive, you’re superior and to not understand the different learning styles everyone else has especially in group settings. While I’m obviously not sure how it’s affected you and how you think, one of my friends is growing up like this and the way she values intelligence and how it feels to be around her in an academic setting is very unlike other people, not even that she’s the most intelligent person but how serious she views it and how she breaks down when things don’t go her way.

I know As are more common in the US than UK due to how tests work and stuff but it’s crazy to me cuz i see this all the time where as here most parents who care about grades want the child to pass or maybe get Bs very very few expect As cuz it’s impossible for everyone to get As in the uk

I think it’s good to hold your kids to decent academic standards to teach them to work hard. But in a real job/ college communication, balance, and independence are all really valuable when maintaining your health, which has always been the most important thing to my parents. I can understand how a reward system could motivate people who are not self motivated, but it should never dictate your worth. Putting so much academic stress on yourself can destroy your physical and mental health. I have seen it time and time again with many of my friends whose parents prioritize grades and success over experience, learning, and health. There is a difference between getting a good well rounded education and just getting good grades that look good on paper, but destroyed your health.
