I had a red, metallic lava lamp. Like red and black metallic - LITERALLY looked like lava. In like a rocket shape bottle, my mom made me sell it at a garage sale when I was younger - I’ve never recovered or been able to find it 😭

I studied your issue. the tisim need to know got to me. I might be crazy or I might have the answer. I honest to God think it's the size of the micron of pigment that has been used in the past. you guys need to be using like.... EXTREMELY TINY mica. the size that's used for car paint or pearlescent plastic. and it's not metallic! it's pearlescent. that's super important to recreating this. it appears metallic because of laminar flow... The particles are lined up on top of each other resulting in a metallic Sheen, but it's not actually using a metallic effect, not a metallic Mica. it's PEARLESCENT mica, in the smallest micron sizes you need! pearlex might work? but like. not a lot. The trick is the alignment and I noticed that when the wax wasn't moving! it's optics, like most of lava lamps tricks!
