@jadesfinancialtips: All Canadians can access low-cost or no-cost chequing account options but many people don’t know about them. If you’re paying monthly bank fees, this is something worth checking. A free bank account comparison tool to compare options: https://itools-ioutils.fcac-acfc.gc.ca/ACT-OCC/SearchFilter-eng.aspx I also mention online banks like Simplii Financial and Tangerine. Your money is just as protected they’re federally regulated and CDIC insured, just like the big banks. #FinancialTipsCanada #MoneyTokCanada #BankingCanada #CostOfLivingCanada #FrugalCanada

Useless to pay fees. You pay fees to use your debit card… I asked for the cheapest option at RBC (4$) to be allowed to use my debit card 12 times a month. I don’t do it and they refund me fees every month.

Reminder that once you give money to a bank you don’t own it anymore. Your money becomes the property of the bank and the bank can lend the money to someone else or invest it. You become a creditor to your money stored in the bank.

banks are also required to give $100 while they put a hold on a cheque, so the person has some money while they wait. if the cheque is less that $100 then they get the amount of that cheque.

Yes banks have a low fee accounts but something that I see alot is people getting the lower fee account and then still paying a higher monthly fee than the unlimited transaction account, as much as I explained this to clients of how many transactions they have with the lower account they come back to argue as to why they are paying a $50 monthly service fee. Low cost accounts are only good for people that dont really use their debit card and use their credit cards more I find. Like you said Another way to avoid fees completely is to use an online bank .

most of those lower cost chequing accounts limit the amount of transactions per month generally around 12 or 16 transactions per month and anything more then that you get charged a fee per additional transaction. This would be a good option if you dont have many transactions but not so great if you use your account regularly.
