We should never laugh at somebody for not knowing something, because people are not born knowing anything. If you happen to know something that someone else does not, that just means that you have had an educational opportunity that they have not yet had. And so to say, “I can't believe you didn't know that,” is the same thing as saying, “I can't believe you didn't live the same life as me.” This is one of the implications of John Locke's strong empiricism. Today we assume that most people learn from experience, but this hasn't always been the case. Plato viewed knowledge as a kind of recollection that our souls once knew, and Descartes thought that we are all born with certain innate ideas. Innate ideas are those that we are supposedly born with, without experience. But John Locke thought this was all absurd, because if there were innate ideas, then everybody in the world would believe them. But there will always be some exception somewhere. As John Locke put it, “There will always be a child or an idiot who disagrees with that idea.” And secondly, even if we could find some universal belief or knowledge, this doesn't prove that it is innate, but rather just universal. And so instead, Locke argues that we should view the human mind as a blank slate or a blank page, and so everything that we learn is like a pen writing on this page. Everything we know starts with experience. Empiricism tells us that all of our ideas come from our environment. We do not know things because of our race or our gender or our biology. Everything that we know and all of the ideas in our head come from the world that we have been exposed to. They come from our learning experiences, and to laugh at somebody who doesn't know something is simply to laugh at their life.
