@drmollysays: Check out part 2 to see how I treated her! 🦠 Demodex in dogs—sounds scary, but here’s the deal: Most dogs already have Demodex mites living in their skin. Totally normal. Problems happen when the immune system lets those mites throw a party. 🎉 ✨ Key things to know: • Not contagious to other pets or people • Not caused by being “dirty” • Often shows up as patchy hair loss, especially on the face • Very treatable especially when caught early and can be prevented entirely with some flea and tick preventatives! If your dog suddenly has hair loss, redness, or recurrent skin infections, your vet may check for Demodex—and if it happens in adult dogs, we also look for why the immune system is struggling. #Demodex #DogDerm #VetExplains #PetParentEducation #DogSkin

my dachshund had that, spent 1000s to cure it. he ended up biting into a electric cord when he was 7 and 1 week later hair started growing back, no itching. I don't recommend but by fluke it helped.

I learned from our vet that you have to give flea and tick all year round, even in the states with a winter season bc it doesn’t always get cold enough to kill them off. In case anyone else was not giving those in the winter like me, now you know!

Why wouldn’t the veterinarian have just given Nexgard or Bavecto to be on the safe side?

The way I screamed Demodicosis almost immediately! My late Cavalier went through all the tests and drugs before we figured it out. She was 13 and ad been diagnosed with T-cell leukemia at 12. We treated the mites and kept her on a monthly drug. She made it to 14.

Not me shouting Demodex at her picture and then yelling to get her on fleas and tick prevention.

In our clinic our vet always does Nexgard if we cannot for sure rule out demodex. We had one patient that literally could not find mites until we did a punch biopsy.

We worked with a rescue, and saw one of their dogs and dvm was sure it had sarcoptic mange. We did like 100 skin scrapes throughout 2-3 wks. No one at foster home was itchy, but she was still convinced. I think it was 1-2 months later when we finally got a positive skin scrape.
