wanting to avoid medicine is just asking to have the child struggle for longer.

My mom had me at 40 and I’m autistic with ADHD, formerly misdiagnosed as ODD 😅 Gotta be a pattern here.

This sounds like my son. He was finally diagnosed with a sleep disorder. He didn't get REM sleep which caused mania and rage outbursts. Meletonin was a game changer!! Lots of therapy to teach behaviors he hadn't learned.

My friend is in this situation. He has autism and has hurt her multiple times. She needs to put him in a home but she is afraid to. He’s bigger than her now and I don’t like going there.

there's a very real chance that it's PDA autism not ODD. "pathological demand avoidance" (sufferers prefer "persist drive for atonamy") it means when a demand is put on the body, the body reacts with a massive anxiety spike instead of the normal way. it can be managed & there are great help groups out there. changing the way you speak helps, life style changes etc sadly demand isn't just ppl asking things. it's also things they know they have to do including needing to eat, drink & toilet basically anything that needs doing can cause massive anxiety.

ppl NEVER think they'll wind up in a situation like this. they only think of the good/positive scenarios. having a kid is the biggest crapshoot there is. I ALWAYS knew that and never had one.

This is the gamble I speak of when having children. You never know what you're going to get. having children is a gamble I don't ever want to take.

i work with children like these and i will always be the biggest defender of these parents. i'm a trained professional and some kids still make it hard in therapy. while they are not at fault for their situation and will always have my fullest sympathy, the parents also have my full support and understanding. living with a diagnosis like this (and others) is hard and overwhelming for everyone involved

I firmly believe that ODD isn’t a real diagnosis. All behaviour, harmful or not is communication. I believe that a lot of people simply aren’t educated enough on autism, especially those with a PDA (clinically known as pathological demand avoidance, though preferably called persistent drive for autonomy) a person who is unable to communicate their feelings and has outbursts may appear random to the onlooker, but if taken the time to be understood, are really not. Because comming from someone who has meltdowns themself, every time I’ve heard about ODD outbursts they just sound like meltdowns. ODD really sounds like a disorder from medival times, like hysteria

If your child had heart disease, crohns, etc- you’d medically do what you needed to do. The same goes for a child with a mental disorder. Your love will never stop and you only feel selfish bc you feel you can’t give your child the love he needs to make him better and still loving yourself/spouse seems unfair. You’re not selfish. You’re not a monster. You are loving mother who needs to remember that sometimes the hardest thing is still the right thing. All the best to you and your family.

I have worked in elementary special ed for 25 years now and the amount of parents that will not medicate their children because addiction runs in their family or their child was exposed in utero to drugs makes me so sad and frustrated. At least in this case, they’re trying everything that has been recommended. I feel for them.
