This is a risk for new authors however, as it can come off purple prose-y. (I hate that term. I love writing like this, but modern commercial works have started leaning away from emotionally descriptive words like this.)

Let me tell ya something. The reason my short stories about war are good is because the lack of extensive descriptions makes it feel like the character that you’re in the head of is just becoming desensitized and tired. It also is meant to read more like an inner monologue instead of a story.

A more important thing is when to describe and how long it should be. You don’t need to describe bond paper. Or, you don’t spend the same amount of time describing something important and something irrelevant.
