I don't think the stuff about Bruce treating the symptoms while Jason targets the root is very fair? Like, Jason kills people. He cuts off any opportunity for redemption. He provides no systemic change by being a serial killer so what root is he targeting exactly? The people he's killing are the symptoms of a system that Bruce tries to lessen the damage of. Bruce provides healthcare and housing and employment. He targets the root (poverty) and the extent to which he actually helps can be debated (billionaires can always do more) but he is aware of what can factor into commiting a crime and he does try to help in those aspects. He also gives them the chance to change their situation and themselves purely by leaving them alive. Jason kills people who were victims of this system without considering what could have lead them there and what they could do if they got out of that situation. Sure, he stops them from reoffending, but what's he doing to stop others from offending other than intimidation through murder and how does this differ from Batman apparently just beating up bad guys? Jason kills the symptoms. Bruce treats the symptoms whilst also targeting the root.

im a believer in a batman that does want and try to change the system, but im ALSO a believer that batman is a persona that Bruce loses himself in so completely that he doesn't see the hypocrisy in the damage he does to criminals while under the mask 🥰

I love Batman but fundamentally Bruce does not fully comprehend the faults of the justice system because he personally will never suffer at the hands of it because he has the money to win the game

love love loveeeee that you mentioned jason continuing to kill bc that is actually SO IMPORTANT OMG and you didn’t say jason should leave (HATE THIS OMG gotham is jason’s city too!!!! it’s his city more!!!) but also i love that you mentioned him staying in his sibs lives bc so often i see people saying that if he crosses bruce, then all the other bats follow suit when that simply? isn’t true? like pretty infamously the other bats disagree w bruce esp on who they work with, how they operate, and the lines they’re willing to cross so why wouldn’t they do the same for someone so clearly trying to help in the best way he knows??? omg love this post, love everything you’re saying, and it reminds me of this long fic series Alley Business by thetiniestteapot on ao3, have you read it? i’ve been obsessed w it for years lolll it’s actually helped inspire how i write jason in ff ever since so if you have, would love to hear your thoughts lmao

LOVE this rewrite. It’s like seeing my own thoughts put to words, this is an incredible way to keep Jason at his best (writing wise) while still adding in a lot of the things that have been added in since the incident. LOVE THIS SO MUCH.

I definitely think Bruce and Jason's relationship should remain strained. Not only from the batarang incident, but also with the whole thing that Zurr put Jason through. (I hate that we never truly see emotional and mental fallout these types of storylines) However, Bruce does try to change the system. We've seen throughout comics that he does use his money to fund social programs and (legal) restorative justice—i rmb a panel where people call him a communist for it. Bruce's approach to the system is entirely dependent on the writer at the moment, but an ideal Bruce Wayne is aware of the systemic issues behind crime. Batman on the other hand—I do believe he loses himself to the mission sometimes. It would be compelling to see a clear distinction between Bruce and Batman, including the conflict that arises when he interacts with his children or the criminals.

I love this take and agree heavily but (if you don’t mind please don’t blow me up) I think I’d like to add onto it a tad, with Jason’s killing I feel like over the course of his storyline the moral dilemma of it should become more refined (if that makes sense?idk) like he does it less and more consciously and that as a character development standpoint because his character larger is heavily interlinked with that debate and most of his stories just write him shooting everyone all over the place: goons, witnesses, the big guys. I feel like for such an intelligent character they should allow room for him to really dig deep into it and what it is and how he should go about improving? Enhancing? Streamlining? And same with Bruce being unable to say sorry and in turn admit his fault. Solely because I do feel this leaves both at a character stalemate like stuck at a certain point in their development. But I haven’t really articulated how I would vision that going about so up until then that stalemate would have to stick. Anyway I just love thinking about it all and the developments and the philosophy behind it all. Amazing takes and yeah I agree.

'The Batarang' That Sliced the Red Hood's Neck by Silver__Hawk is a fic I really like following this scene. That scene horrified me. This fic calls out Bruce’s unintentional abNse and doesn’t excuse it in the slightest but doesn’t paint him as terrible person either. It allows the kids to be protected and defended but makes B focus on his issues and make himself better for the kids too. It’s short and well thought out in my opinion. The scene of Grayson screaming at B was so justified and it all hurt but the scene itself based on hurts, so. Yk. I loved it.

I think you have a flawed understanding of Bruce’s morals. He doesn’t kill hi criminals because he believes in second chances and redemption- as well as his trauma and believing it should never be up to him who lives and dies. Also Bruce doesn’t just donate to charity- he created almost all the charities in Gotham and does have an understanding of poverty. Yes he has had money (though in his training he often did not but I digress), but this doesn’t mean he can’t understand poverty on some level. Further, killing the criminals (who statistically are others who were in poverty) is not exactly the way to stop that? Whe it comes to criminals like Joker why do we only blame Batman when so many others, including NJ, could’ve killed him. Plus, after Jason’s death, Bruce thought Joker was dead from the helicopter crash. Jason’s trauma is valid, but it doesn’t mean that he is the pinnacle of morality just because he says it. Also canonically Gotham is cursed so to get to the “root” of it they’d need power. I think you understand Jason decently, and I like parts of the idea but I don’t like portraying that Jason was totally correct in this situation and Bruce was the only one messing up or having flaws imo.

there are parts of this i agree with but i don’t think the 3rd slide is a fair reflection of bruce’s worldview or his attempts at reforming criminals. a well written batman believes in redemption and offering the people he fights second chances. beating/abusing them in not his default.

i rlly love this take! in the fic i wrote i also didnt retcon it because i felt it was important to how broken jason and Bruce's relationship is. i also hatee when comics have jason no longer kill just to be at peace for bruce. jason has his own moral code he would stand up for!

I have always thought that since it was changed in the under the red hood film that bruce did it on instinct and just. Missed. Like he just messed up insanely bad and accidentally got Jason in the neck instead of it hitting the gun, just like how instead of saving Jason he ended up dooming him with the Robin costume-

I think part of the issue is the comic book narrative in itself. There’s a certain way writers want the audience to think and perceive as the right way which is not exactly reflective of our world. A real deconstruction of the root problem would be to totally overthrow the current structure that keeps these issues around, which obviously will not happen in the DC universe. The whole of superhero tropes falls in this catalogue cause superheros are reactive heroes and not action heroes. They fight supervillains but they don’t fight systemic oppression and overthrow the capitalistic government. It’s the whole genre that is missing a big aspect of the real world so when they try to add the real life nuance to the superhero genre it doesn’t translate well. In addition to this, i’d say neither Bruce nor Jason are completely in the right. Taking a life is something a superhero should do for the greater good, example diana who uses lethal force as an absolute last resort but something she’s willing to do for the innocents. However, killing low criminals who are part of the systemic oppression and only trying to survive, most of which have families relying on them, is not the answer. Bruce’s and Jason’s story should be of coming to a somewhat mutual understanding, Jason learning to take out the people who are the root of the problem and Bruce not letting go of his moral code but not forcing it onto Jason either🤷‍♀️
