Texas is a bit meh geographically. Arizona, Utah, Colorado, California, and the PNW are spectacular. Do not skip the grand Canyon and Sedona.

Fly to San Francisco and rent a car and drive down to Carmel. Such a pretty drive. LA sucks but San Diego is beautiful.
