North-West Frontier Province Holds Referendum – Peshawar, 1947. In India’s North-West Frontier Province, a referendum is held to decide which of the new states its people wish to join: India or Pakistan. Peshawar, its capital, becomes the scene of political parades. The Redshirts boycott the vote, insisting that there should be a third option—an independent frontier state called “Pathanistan” (Pashtunistan)—and their leader, Khan Abdul Ghaffar Khan, addresses them. Posters inform the public that the red ballot box is for India and the green ballot box is for Pakistan. The Greenshirts (the Ghazi, Pakhtoon, and Pathans) are Muslims who follow Mr Jinnah’s Muslim League.
