Gardening on Sunday (1961) By John Falter Published for The Saturday Evening Post Some paintings look simple until you realize they are asking a harder question. John Falter’s Gardening on Sunday looks like a funny illustration about lawn care, but it is really about two different ways of living. One homeowner stands outside his pink house trimming a perfect hedge. His lawn is clean, his birdbath shines, and everything on his side of the property looks controlled. Next door, everything is messy. The grass is overgrown, toys are scattered everywhere, a dog sleeps in the weeds, and the homeowner is asleep on the porch with a newspaper over his face. At first, it looks like a simple contrast between responsibility and laziness. But the man with the perfect yard is still working on his day off. His perfection requires constant maintenance. The messy neighbor may not have the better-looking yard, but he has rest. That is the real meaning of the image. Falter is not only comparing order and disorder. He is asking whether perfection is worth it if it costs your peace. The question is not which yard looks better. It is which life looks better. 👉 Follow @bymuseum for vivid stories and hidden meanings in classical art.
