Some time back, i was telling a hairdresser a little about Tseaddo, anyone who grew up in La will know this too. As a child who grew up in La, i followed my grandfather a lot to his farm, he had an okro farm, tomato farm, maize and watermelon farms. The farmland had multiple streams and the areas were mostly waterlogged. We used to call this farm areas “Tradefair Sɛɛ” (behind the Trade fair) because of the famous Ghana International Trade Fair building which has now been demolished, there was the beautiful African Lake and the Kpeshie which extended deep into the farms. Before we knew it these farm areas were being cleared and some of our people from La moved to stay there, then the name Tse Addo came up (from what we were told it’s a name of one of the first few people who moved there “Addo”). The place became a whole new area on its own and our grandparents sold most part of it. Eventually the beautiful streams got filled, a part of the African lake got filled and the Kpeshie as well got filled. I was just telling the hairdresser that with time these water bodies will find their ways back, because there’s no way we can win this battle with nature. Most of the people who built around these areas never stayed there, they rented them out and left tenants to their fate. Some are also there but have made sure they reserve their ground and first floors for such heavy rains so those parts of their homes are empty. What has happened today is extreme and it is a matter of emergency, measures have to be taken and this includes demolishing some buildings because this will surely happen again, if not soon, maybe some years later.
