What’s the difference between PTSD and C-PTSD? Most people have heard of PTSD, or post-traumatic stress disorder. But C-PTSD, or complex PTSD, is talked about much less. PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder) can develop after experiencing or witnessing trauma. It can show up as intrusive memories or flashbacks, nightmares, anxiety, avoiding reminders of what happened, feeling emotionally numb, or constantly feeling like you need to be on guard. C-PTSD (complex post-traumatic stress disorder) is typically associated with trauma that is prolonged or repeated, particularly when someone feels trapped or unable to escape the situation. This can include childhood abuse or neglect, domestic violence, or other experiences where someone is repeatedly exposed to trauma over time. Someone with C-PTSD can experience many of the same symptoms as PTSD, along with additional challenges involving emotional regulation, relationships, and their sense of self. So while there can be a lot of overlap, one of the biggest distinctions is the nature and duration of the trauma and the additional symptoms that can come with C-PTSD. And an important reminder: this isn’t about one type of trauma being “worse” than another. Trauma affects every person differently, and experiencing trauma does not automatically mean you have PTSD or C-PTSD. Many of these symptoms can also overlap with other mental health conditions, which is why an accurate diagnosis matters. The good news is that trauma can be treated. Psychotherapy is commonly part of treatment, and approaches including CBT, EMDR, and other trauma-focused therapies may be helpful depending on the individual.
