@adoringsharon: In the 1970s, before their death sentences were commuted to life imprisonment due to changes in California’s death penalty laws, Doris committed to studying hair design as a tribute to Jay Sebring. She later opened a successful salon called Tates. Around that same time, the people responsible for the Tate/LaBianca murders became eligible for parole less than a decade after the crimes. Doris found herself juggling the salon, her own family life, and an increasing commitment to victims’ rights advocacy. After the passage of Proposition 8 in 1982, which allowed victims and their families to formally address the parole board, she became the first Californian to deliver a victim impact statement at a parole hearing. She spoke directly at the hearing of Tex Watson, making sure the board heard exactly how devastating those crimes had been. Her advocacy helped change how victims and their families are treated within the justice system — ensuring their voices would no longer be excluded from proceedings that directly affected them. Today, Mrs. Tate is affectionately remembered as the “mother of the victims rights movement.” #noparoleformansonfamily #sharontate #doristate #victimsrights #justice
