A North Carolina woman who vanished just before Christmas in 2001 has been seen publicly for the first time in 24 years after being located alive and briefly arrested on an old DUI-related warrant. Michele Hundley Smith, now 62, disappeared on December 9, 2001, after leaving her Eden, North Carolina home to go shopping in Martinsville, Virginia. She never returned and missed a scheduled court date later that month, leading to an outstanding warrant. Last week, authorities found her living in Saint Pauls, North Carolina. She was arrested on the decades-old warrant, released on a $2,000 bond, and is due in court on March 26. Prosecutors confirmed she will not face charges related to her disappearance. Smith has since spoken publicly, saying she has reconnected with her middle daughter, Amanda, who spent years campaigning to keep her mother’s case in the spotlight. According to Smith, her daughter has forgiven her, and they are beginning to rebuild communication. Amanda has shared mixed emotions — expressing shock, hurt, love, and uncertainty — while emphasizing that both her parents deserve respect. Smith said she left during a difficult mental health period and believed at the time it was her only option, adding that her children were left in their father’s care. #northcarolina #missing #missingperson #news #found
