When I was in, they made us all stand up and say why we joined. Almost everyone was there to avoid a prison sentence. A lack of opportunity is the greatest contributor to recruitment.

i think it’s a very nuanced conversation and the understanding people have about the level of brainwashing that contributes to kids enlisting is very much influenced by the region of the usa you grew up in. someone on the west coast, for instance, is going to have a very different view than someone who grew up in the southeast. it’s not something you can really understand unless you’ve seen it firsthand.

As a vet, I won't say my reasoning was not selfish. At the time it felt like a better option than being homeless. And until there's world peace I do think they're should be a military. I also think that most, if not all, of what the US military has done since WWII is wrong. And I do agree with you, going after the vastly smaller number of wealthy so I didn't have to make the decision between homelessness and, well, not that. Would be a better option.

People join the military because it is the path of least resistance. A slavery hegemony built as a trap. Poverty creates crime, crime creates grunts, and grunts do the dirty work of the elite class. Failing to acknowledge that a shackle manufacturing system wouldn’t be seeking to ensoldier its purposefully impoverished to have an endless flow of fodder is short sighted; it is the explicit purpose of fascist ideology to put the outgroup into the fodder chamber.
