My brother took Bus 8 from Toa Payoh at around 7:55am today (27 Aug) and was assaulted by a lady for not giving up his seat to an elderly passenger. Firstly, sitting in a priority seat is not illegal. Secondly, no one deserves to be assaulted for sitting in any seat. And thirdly, not every disability or medical condition is visible. My brother’s leg was affected by complications from both a stroke and leukemia. He has never used his struggles to seek sympathy, favours, or special treatment. This is why we need greater awareness and consideration for others. We cannot assume that someone sitting in a priority seat is being inconsiderate or entitled. We simply do not know what they may be going through. Respect for the elderly is important, but it should never come at the expense of basic respect for another person. There are ways to communicate, ask, or offer a seat without resorting to aggression or violence. If she is a person of faith, perhaps this is a moment for her to reflect on and practise the values her religion teaches: compassion, kindness, patience, and respect for others. What happened to my brother was completely unacceptable. The lady involved needs to take responsibility for her actions and offer my brother a sincere apology. That is the least he deserves.
