I'm a designer who has transitioned to PM, and I need a technical expert to help me actually ship. AI has a long way to go to safely replace that role.

I actually disagree. I think EMs for the time being are needed even more. AI causes HR chaos. "am I digging my own grave?", "will I have a job in 6 months?", "We have too much code completed and not enough eyes to review this code and need help". humans are still in the pipeline and processes need tweaking now more than ever.

If each of these builders can do all of the jobs by themselves, what's stopping them from starting that same company on their own, instead of getting a fixed salary to make unlimited money for somebody else?

this seems to misunderstand the EM role, at least at a place like Meta. EMs support people and aren't necessarily involved in technical decisions. I've never seen anyone explain how we can remove the actual "people support" part (who do you talk to about progressing in your career now?)

I wonder what world do you live that makes u think that a designer and an engineer can be merged into one single role. These are different jobs not because we need double the amount of time to build the product, but because these people have completely different skills. They know the craft in their own area. Merge that in the same person and be ready to have either the ugliest or the most bugged system ever.

The models still write horrible code that will be hard to maintain in the long run. The engineering expertise to rein them in is still needed, which likely will not overlap with the product design expertise. So I’d guess that two roles are really the best flying formation.

Two problems when hiring builders, finding talent that have the taste and the architectural knowledge is not that easy

Engineers have become Claude Code managers, that is how I feel anyway. 23 years of software engineering and I have not just made peace with this new role but I love it!

But you can only one Lead. Who is #2 and #3? AI Product Manager? AI Deputy Lead? AI Strategy Manager? AI R&D Manager?

The interesting thing is managers (EM/PM) are best suited to be the leads if the future, as they understand the tech, product, and the business sides

Politics and the need for career growth doesn’t go away in this new world. I don’t think all TLs want to grow in that direction, but I think EMs can be expected to take on more tech work.
