This past week I had an arborist friend drop off two yards of wood chips that he had on his lot. As soon as I took one pitchfork full of chips off that pile I saw one, a jumping worm. If you’ve been following along you know that I discovered that Asian Jumping Worms were destroying the soil in my raised beds. These worms are invasive and pervasive and they’re all over New England. I haven’t even heard about them until I started noticing these worms acting strangely in my compost pile and I started to notice the soil quality in my beds deteriorating. So I texted my friend and told him what I had found in his chips. I wasn’t upset, maybe he didn’t know. I just wanted to pass the information along, but this is what he told me. He didn’t know they were in his wood chips, he thanked me for letting me know, and then he told me something that blew my mind. He has not been a yard this season that doesn’t have them. That’s how pervasive these worms are. This man visits hundreds of homes and they. are. EVERYWHERE. I felt overwhelmed and defeated and decided to use the wood chips anyway. I’ve found the worms all over my yard and I may regret using, but I though a few more couldn’t hurt too much 🫣 So, what’s the plan for my plot of land? Well I’m still formulating it. I refuse to be defeated by these worms but I do feel stuck. I’m never going to be the one on here to tell you that I have the answers when I don’t. All I can say is this, no matter what comes our way we will persist. Sometimes solutions take time to find and implement. Right now I’m just taking it day by day. If you’re interested to see how we handle the worms, follow along and if you’re dealing with them too let me know in the comments. The least we can do is offer each other solidarity. Happy wormy gardening! #backyardhomestead #microhomestead #suburbanhomestead #earthworms #beginnergardener
