July 6, 2003 is an unforgettable date for Rwandan football fans. It was on this date that Rwanda secured, for the first time in its history, a place in the final phase of the Africa Cup of Nations.🇷🇼🤍 The hero of the day was Jimmy Gatete. The striker scored the only goal of the match, capitalizing on a mistake by the Ghanaian central defense led by Samuel Osei Kuffour. After the goal, the packed Amahoro Stadium erupted in victory chants. Jimmy Gatete is considered to date to be one of the best strikers Rwanda has ever known, according to Rwandan football experts. Rwanda’s Rwanda national football team (Amavubi) made their historic and sole Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification for the 2004 tournament in Tunisia by topping Group 13 with 7 points. 🇺🇬 Uganda 1–0 Ghana — 7 September 2002 🇬🇭 Ghana 4–2 Rwanda — 13 October 2002 🇷🇼 Rwanda 0–0 Uganda — 30 March 2003 🇺🇬 Uganda 0–1 Rwanda — 7 June 2003 🇬🇭 Ghana 1–1 Uganda — 22 June 2003 🇷🇼 Rwanda 1–0 Ghana — 6 July 2003 For their first participation in the 2004 Africa Cup of Nations, this Rwandan team, coached by Serbian Ratomir Dujkovic, narrowly missed qualifying for the quarter-finals. In their first match, Rwanda lost 2-1 to Tunisia, the host nation. In their second match, Ratomir’s players drew 1-1 against Guinea and then won 1-0 in their final group match against the Democratic Republic of Congo. A 1-1 draw between Tunisia and Guinea prevented Rwanda from reaching the quarterfinals. Rwanda finished the group stage in third place with 4 points. 19 years later, Rwanda is still chasing a second qualification for a final phase of the AFCON.
