Tim Cook’s legacy is mostly just being a good caretaker while not innovating and also not destroying the brand. He took minimal risks and as a result saw very few outright losses. The risks he did take were all failures (Apple Vision Pro, Apple Car, Apple Intelligence). I think he understood his own strengths enough to know not to reinvent the wheel when the wheel was still doing just fine, and he’s leaving right at the moment that resting on their laurels is finally no longer working. Apple needs risks again in order to continue succeeding and he was smart enough to take his money and run rather than taint his legacy.

I’d argue he dodged a huge bubble. Spending 1bil (comparatively nothing) paying Google vs competitors gambling the entire company on AI is a pretty safe (and sane!) move. If the AI thing ever becomes profitable they can just catch up. That’s always been their game plan. They didn’t make the first mp3 player, smartphone, smart watch or wireless earbuds. They just looked at what other people already built and gave it a good UX (with a sprinkle of their own R&D in there). They always release their version when the technology is good/usable/mature enough.

I’m sure Tim is very proud of his exit. I’m not in finance, but to leave a company of this size and legacy in such a stable position with no waves seems like the ultimate goal. I’m very interested to see what John will bring as an engineer leader. It’s very cool to see another era emerge especially in this climate. Even as the most boring company, they still keep me on my toes. The nostalgia is too strong.
