I think the trick is to learn to be more secure in yourself that you don’t need their validation or lose yourself just to make it work. You make your intentions clear on your needs , don’t play games and if they distance or leave let them go. Communicate the best you can without blaming them and if they still can’t meet your basic expectations be strong enough to walk away. When they comeback and they will, be firm with those expectations you set. You have boundaries too you shouldn’t have to adjust yourself for them, be strong enough to leave no matter how much you love them.
