@jake.pnw: You Will Not Believe These Blue Creatures Washing Up On Beaches ‼️😱 These are Velella velella, also called by-the-wind sailors, and they are NOT jellyfish the way most people think. They’re actually colonial hydrozoans, which means each one is made of tiny specialized animals working together as one floating creature. That little clear “sail” on top catches the wind and pushes them across the ocean surface, but that also means they have almost no control over where they go. When the wind shifts, thousands can wash up on the beach at once. And yes, they have tiny stinging cells to catch plankton, but their sting is usually not dangerous to humans. Still, don’t rub your eyes after touching one because it can irritate your skin or eyes. So next time you see these blue little ocean sailors on the sand, you’re looking at a whole floating colony that got blown in by the wind. #Learning #Education #nature #travel #animals
