This is my mom whenever she found something I wrote as a kid. I tried writing my own version of Cinderella once and she found it and assumed that because the mom in the book was mean that that meant that I hated her and thought she was a terrible mom so she threw it away 😂

I do fear writing in an age of moral absolutes, where fiction is held to an impossible standard of "setting an example" even on the left wing, which kills nuance and complexity and stifles creativity. I mean sure, my stories have something to say about right and wrong, but my characters aren't perfect people. They're plausible, complex people. You have to use your own brain to figure out when they're doing good things and when they're not. If you aren't practicing that kind of discernment when reading fiction, where are you learning those skills? ARE you learning those skills? Are you thinking for yourself, ever?

I read about someone who had this issue as a “spicy novel” writer. People assumed she actually was put in these situations, and would ask what she really did, and she’s like, “no… that’s not me. I didn’t actually do these.”

God the part about not rooting for the main character is so real😭 Ive always loved the villains and antiheroes my whole life and i miss when people would just be like "oh yeah villains are hot" and leave me alone. Like yeah, thats a way shallower take than im thinking, but at least that was acceptance and not "BuT yOu MuSt bE A TerRiBlE PerSON tO liKE thAT gUy"
