@bepurewellness: After a 14-year international consultation, experts have proposed changing the name from Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) to Polyendocrine Metabolic Ovarian Syndrome (PMOS) to better reflect the science behind the condition. Because despite the name, PCOS has never been just about ovarian cysts. PMOS is now recognised as a complex hormonal and metabolic condition that can impact insulin regulation, ovulation, fertility, cardiovascular health, mental wellbeing, energy production, and long-term metabolic health. Research also shows that many women diagnosed with PCOS do not actually have ovarian cysts, with around 65-70% experiencing insulin resistance. More than 50 international organisations and over 22,000 patient and healthcare professional responses contributed to the renaming process. The updated terminology aims to better reflect the whole-body nature of the condition and improve awareness, diagnosis, research, and long-term care outcomes for women’s health.
