@hels5071: Is being a Granny on the dad side very different to being on the mum side? I’d absolutely love to hear from grandparents who have experience with this 🥰🥰🥰 #mumsoftiktok #grandparentsoftiktok #familydynamics #familymatters #generationaltrauma

I’m not involved with my parents but my mother in law comes to see the kiddos and me, which makes me so happy!

It’s not the same, most of us don’t have the same privileges. I’m not allowed to take my grandson wherever I want but the gma on the mom’s side can do whatever she wants. Also I have bought clothes/shoes and other things that my grandson never wore but anything given to my grandson from his other gma will be worn till it doesn’t fit🤷🏻‍♀️😂

My mum wasn’t allowed any real interaction with my 2 brothers kids whereas she owned mine and my sisters kids 💖

The difference here is, my MIL comes to cuddle baby and see her son who, let's face it. hasn't exactly been through the ringer. I'm making them cups of tea and lunch and feeling like they're judging my house and my parenting. My mum comes and she's here to see my baby, but also to see me and give me any help with housework or anything else I need. she always brings lunch and I can be comfortable around her.

Granny here on dad’s side. We get to see our new granddaughter twice a week. A mid week visit and a weekend one. We live 15 minutes away. Her parents are there every day sometimes twice a day, they live 5 minutes away. We have offered help but they always declines our help yet always has help from her parents. When she goes back to work we hope to see the baby more. At the minute we are just going with what they say and hope for the best,

I totally understand that there are different stories here and some daughters in law maybe for real is keeping the child away from you, but for the most part, I want to say this, did you bother to have a relationship with her and treat her decently BEFORE there were children? This has happened to so many of my friends where mother in law never included them or made them feel welcome and then expected to be invited to be super present with the grandchildren, like no, then she has no trust for you or interest in spending time with you or handing over her child to you. My mom is both, she has made it a priority to create a relationship with my brothers wife, before there even was children she went out of her way to invite her into our family, and she is a really involved grandmother also for their children because she nurtured that relationship and never overstepped and has been respectful of boundaries always, and just shown that she genuinely want to help in any way she can and they are comfortable.

I think it’s different because a MIL just wants to see the baby and sometimes mums can feel like just an incubator where as the granny on mums side wants to see the baby and her daughter. I would naturally spend more time with my mum than I would my MIL and that’s the same now I have a baby too because she just has to come along with me! My MIL is fabulous though always helpful and always there but you do feel like an incubator sometimes when you know what they want is to spend time with the baby not you xx

Yes being granny on the sons side is definitely different. I am not treated bad in anyway but the granny to the daughter just gets more updates mostly because daughters talk to moms way more often. And get options first.

It is very different but you need to release the thoughts of it being a competition. I’m the mother of boys. My DIL is close to her mum and lives closer to her. They help more often but we are also lucky to see them at least once a week. I respect my DIL and she’s a fabulous mother. Of course she’s closer to her mum, I’m not her mum but it has no bearing on the relationship we have or that I have with our beautiful grandkids.

I’m granny on the dad side and I have my grandchild 3 nights a week (my choice) I love having my grandchild as much as I can if it was up to me I would have her every night if I could 😂 I am so lucky that mum allows me to have her as much as I do. It annoys me when people tell me my kid is so lucky that I take my grandchild so much but I think I’m the lucky one getting to spend so much time with her 🥰

My mum comes to see me and my children. My MIL comes to see the children. My mum helps me with the children. My MIL needs hosting. I have a very close bond with my mum and my MIL has good intentions, but we’re very different people and naturally I gravitate to my mum as my parenting is shaped by the way she parented me.

Absolutely different , daughter usually favours their mum you can only do what you are allowed to do and you can feel excluded at times .

I’m a nanny on mums side & very much involved, but we have a son so I’m taking notes from these comments to make a conscious effort to really think about my sons future wife when they have children x

If you have a good relationship with the daughter in law, there’s no difference.

Not a granny, just a mum. But I suspect it’s different in the first year or so when baby is pretty much always with mum, as mum is probably more likely to have a stronger relationship, connection, and comfort with her own mum and therefore that granny has more access. However I believe if the dads side are building a connection with their grandchildren that by the time the child is 3-4 then it’s really much more to do with the relationship they have built with the kids than how much access they had to a baby who really only wants their mum anyway ❤️

It’s got nothing to do with them being a granny on the dads side, and all to do with how nice your MIL is . My MIL has my daughter more than my mum. And they have an amazing bond!

my mil tried to wake up the baby because she found it boring that he was sleeping. she didn’t offer to help with anything. she keeps buying things we have no room for and haven’t asked for. my own mom on the other hand has helped cleaning, buys essentials for us and respect boundaries

Not a granny myself yet (son is 13) but my MIL is more present in my sons life than my mum has been. She consistently makes the effort, wants to spend time with my son, and he wants to spend time with her. She’s fabulous. I think all MILs need to do is be open, offer to help (without overstepping) and DIL will foster the relationship with you! 🥰

The difference is, my mum dosent need to really ask, if it’s anything to do with my 3. She knows exactly how I parent as it’s pretty similar to how she brought me up. She just does things without asking, making them a snack, changing their bum etc. she’s very, very involved with my children. My brother, her son, has 2 children and she loves them dearly! But she would ask before doing anything incase of stepping on anyone’s toes. X
