@ezbruhhspinz: When Ez was not even one year old…we had a doctor walk into our room and tell us we would be leaving the hospital with a trach. He had just gone in for a routine scan for an MRI and because he was a baby, they had to sedate him for this one. The anesthesiologist was concerned about his airway after the procedure and I walked into a PACU room with my baby struggling to breathe…the next thing we knew, we were told that he would get a scope (confirming he has bilateral vocal cord paralysis) and would need some sort of intervention. We were told we would discuss our options, but before anyone else spoke to us, a doctor walked into our room, gave us an information packet and started explaining how to care for the trach he would be getting that day. We were so shocked. It was supposed to be a short outpatient procedure, just an in/out visit. No preparation, education, discussion or emotional support at all involved. We pumped the brakes and made sure to have a lot of discussions with doctors and ultimately decided on a different procedure with a very patient ENT doctor who was phenomenal. But all that to say that I wish I could’ve seen more possibilities for what bilateral vocal cord paralysis could look like…so here it is.
