After just four months, I passed HSK 4 (intermediate level). By month eight, I passed HSK 5 (advanced level) —which allowed me to enter a Chinese university in Shanghai. Yes, Chinese is one of the hardest languages for Westerners— I‘m Italian. Yes, it was exhausting.
