@reshgala__: Did you know that short, shade loving plants like lettuce, arugula, cilantro, parsley, spinach, bunching onions and even basil can be underplanted in the canopy of larger crops like tomatoes, broccoli, cucumbers and peppers? This technique of intensive planting called “underplanting” allows you to have bigger harvests, a more productive space, fewer weeds and less watering too (soil that’s not exposed to the elements stays moist and cool). I’ve been successfully growing lettuce in the shade of cabbages and broccoli, cilantro in the shade of tomatoes in summer, spinach next to my carrots and cauliflowers and arugula with pole beans. 🔑 THE TRICK is to plant seedlings of the short, quick maturing crops at the same time as you plant seedlings of the larger crops. Alternatively, you can direct sow seeds of the shorter crops like lettuce, arugula and cilantro etc and once they germinate and grow 2” to 3” tall, then plant seedlings of the larger crop. This ensures that all plants get proper sunlight for growth and germination and is the key to your success with underplanting. 👍 Hope you’ll give this method a try this year.
