I’ve had many encounters on the running path over the years and the overwhelming majority of them have been so pleasant. But this one was… not so much. Whether you’re a runner, a cyclist, weightlifter, I feel like there’s a sort of code: don’t offer unsolicited advice. You have no idea what the other person is going through, what their history is, whether they’re in the proper mental space to even be talking to anyone at the moment. The ONLY exception to this general rule is when it comes to safety, of course—theirs or yours. But, if you’re gonna do it anyway, definitely don’t get upset when they don’t want to take your unsolicited advice. Honestly, I think this sort of thing applies in life, not just in running. And I say this as a professional advice giver (lawyer)! I always try my best to be EXTREMELY careful when giving even REQUESTED advice, carefully reviewing every available piece of information. And if I don’t have what I need to render good counsel, I ask for the information and keep looking. When you start advising someone with a very limited amount of information, you are running the risk of giving very poor advice indeed and, well, making yourself look not… great. At least that’s been my own experience (when I was a baby lawyer and thought I was “hot stuff”!). And finally, please don’t come to a dead stop directly in the middle of a running path without first looking around or warning the people around you—especially when it doubles as a bike path. Not only is this poor path etiquette, it IS a safety issue for everyone. #Running#marathonrunning #longdistancerunning
