So this happened to one of my binders, I’m not 100% sure what the exact reason was, but I repainted the binder and have had 0 issue now. I use gesso as a base layer, i think it helps the paint stick better, and spray about 3 thin layers of the matte mod podge acrylic spray, and I wait about 15 minutes between each layer for it for dry before spraying again. I also have done a binder where some parts I didnt add the gesso base layer and it was fine, i think because it was only one or two layers. I did notice that the parts that were flaking the most on the previous binder were the areas that took a lot of layers, like yellow and white. I’m not super sure

thank you all for your advice! I ended up touching this one up and resealing it with spray modge podge and then a layer of regular modge podge. foe other binders, i tested spraying with a couple layers of spray sealer and then a layer of regular modge podge. seems to have fixed the problem!

It’s a good idea to do multiple coats of sealant and give it at least 12 hrs to fully dry

If you’re using paint pens, that could be why. I notice I have the same issues when trying to mod podge anything I’ve used paint pens for. I think they’re water based??????? I’m not sure tbh, but they tend to lift a lot when rubbed on

Is it possible that those areas had a bit of oil from your hand or a bit of dust on them? Like more on those areas than others which causes the paint not wanting to stick to the surface and when you brush on modpodge it lifts the paint from those spots?

You might have pressed to hard during the painting process mine did the same thing I had to end up cleaning it up and just waiting to do it to a different binder this is the aftermath after,it peeled the first layer I painted to hard and it lifted the material there, you can see the material that lifted and left lighter area

I’ve noticed some white and light color paint pens are almost “chalky” in consistency and tend to flake more than other colors. It might be a quality issue, like cheaper brands adding chalk or something to make it more opaque because I don’t have this problem with my Sharpie or Poscas, but I do have it with my off-name brands

I wouldn’t use modpodge it might be smearing it. Or if there’s an alcoholic ingredient it might be making it flake
