They killed the children because they were being used as human shields. That was the justification in 1906. And it is the same justification being used today. At Penny Appeal Canada's "Voices of Resilience" event, Dr. Gabor Maté shares a piece of history that most people have never encountered in a classroom. In 1906, American forces invaded the Philippines under the stated mission of civilizing its people. When Muslim Filipino villagers fled into a volcano crater to escape the killing, the army found them. Three hundred men, women, children, and babies were massacred. Over 200,000 Filipinos were killed during that period in total. The language used to justify the killing of children was identical to what we hear today. Dr. Maté's point is not simply historical. It is structural. These events are kept out of mainstream education deliberately. Not because they are unimportant but because they are too important. Because if you learn them, the language being used right now starts to sound familiar. The patterns become visible. And once you can see a pattern, you cannot be told that what you are witnessing is unprecedented, exceptional, or without precedent. There is nothing new under the sun. The tactics are the same. The justifications are the same. The targets have changed names but not character. History is being kept from you for a reason. The question is what you do once you know it. #Muslimi #DrGaborMate #PennyAppealCanada #ColonialHistory #NeverAgainMeansEverywhere
