That line lowkey upset me the first time watching the LA bc it initially belongs to Sanji - La Luffy is a little more emotionally intelligent than the og, so originally when the fight between Luffy and Wapol happens Chopper is confused and asks about Luffy's stretchiness- "Oh, our captain is a rubber man." "What's that?" And Sanji gives him the BIGGEST grin and says "It's a type of monster." So many of the crew have been called or deemed monstrous for some reason or another and they all see past what the world placed on them to be such a perfect family anyway all of the straw hats make me so unwell (Sanji, Robin and Chopper especially though Brook and Franky also get honourable mentions)

you mention it but the thing luffy and chopper have in common are that they have fruits and thats also an important part imo. it shows chopper that however "weird" he might be that he can always look to luffy to be reassured he's not the weirdest person in the room even if he tried because luffy will always strive to be weirder and very fun

YES!!!! I absolutely adore how One Piece plays with the ideas of monstrosity and being monstrous. It's a really solid through-line in the series, and I always *lock in* when it comes up. One of my favorite instances is when a character is born for the specific purpose of having a third eye in order to benefit her mother's ambitions, and then she's abus3d and called hideous because of it by her mother, while her mother continues to benefit from her "monstrosity."
