one time shortly after i came out I was looking into more queer history. i found a video of sylvia rivera at a protest. it was so inspiring, that i felt the need to show my mom. she was watching and then started crying. she realized that sylvia was an old friend of hers that she hadn’t spoken to in years. when my mom was in her early 20s (sometimes in the 80s) she was dating a woman and they lived in tarrytown ny where she was neighbors with sylvia. it was a wild connection.

looking back at the queer history always gave me this sense of sadness, knowing many people had sacrificed and fought for our rights and identities
