Papers sat neatly across her desk, untouched coffee long forgotten beside them. No one disturbed her this late. No one wanted to. “Ms. Yoo, the revised contracts were sent to your emai—” Her assistant stopped speaking. Because the office doors had opened. Winter stepped inside slowly. The entire atmosphere changed immediately. She looked half asleep. Oversized hoodie. Soft pajama pants. Slippers that made quiet sounds against the marble floor. Completely out of place in the middle of the company’s top executive floor. Winter blinked once at the people outside the office, visibly confused by how many were still there. Then her eyes landed on Karina. And she smiled instantly. “There you are.” The employees went silent. Karina looked up from her laptop. For a second, her expression stayed unreadable. Then it softened so quickly it almost didn’t look real. “Baby,” she said quietly. Winter walked toward her without hesitation, dragging herself slightly like she was too tired to fully lift her feet. “I woke up,” she mumbled. “You weren’t there.” Karina’s attention was completely gone now. The assistant was still standing there awkwardly holding documents, but Karina didn’t even glance in their direction anymore. Winter stopped beside her chair and looked down at the papers covering the desk. “You’re still busy?” Karina leaned back slightly, looking up at her. “A little.” Winter frowned softly. Not angry. Just sleepy and unhappy about it. “You said you’d come back soon.” The room somehow became even quieter. Because no one had ever heard someone speak to Karina like that before. And even stranger— Karina let her. “I know,” Karina said gently. Winter stared at her for another second, clearly trying to stay awake. Then she quietly climbed into Karina’s lap like it was the most natural thing in the world. The assistant nearly looked away out of instinct. Karina moved immediately, one arm wrapping securely around Winter’s waist before she could even settle properly. “Careful,” she murmured. Winter curled against her chest without answering, face pressing into the warmth of her shoulder. Karina looked down at her. “You should be asleep.” “I was,” Winter mumbled. “But you weren’t there.” Something in Karina’s expression softened again. Dangerously soft. The kind no one in the company was supposed to see. Winter’s hand lazily reached for Karina’s wrist, playing with the sleeve of her dress shirt absentmindedly. “You work too much,” she whispered. Karina let out the quietest breath through her nose. Probably the closest thing to a laugh anyone in the room had ever heard from her. Then she adjusted Winter higher against her carefully, making sure she was comfortable before looking back toward the frozen employees outside the office. Her expression returned to calm immediately. “Leave the documents,” she said. The assistant nodded too quickly. “Y-yes, Ms. Yoo.” No one moved slowly after that. The moment the door closed again, the office became quiet. Winter was already half asleep in her lap. Karina glanced down at her for a long moment before reaching for her abandoned coffee and moving it farther away from Winter automatically. Then she pulled a blanket from the back of her chair and draped it gently around her shoulders. Winter sighed softly against her chest. Karina’s hand rested against her back instantly. Steady.
