I love bumblebees. All my interactions with them are one of those silly bees accidentally bumping into me and then making the worst crash landing on a flower I’ve ever seen. Love them to bits. They definitely live up to their name.

So the honey thing becomes weird at this point. Bumblebees like honey bees have two stomachs. They both gather nectar and pollen. But here is where the differences become notable. Honey is basically somewhat dehydrated nectar. Honeybees actively work on that progress even after regurgitating. Bumblebees do not work on the dehydration progress. So they technically store nectar. Western Honey bees average around 60k in number for a hive. Bumblebees average around 250. The smaller size means less production. So yeah Bumblebees don't make honey. They do store nectar but in very small quantities. I will also grant you this the number of places including educational institutions and foundations that get this wrong are numerous. I am looking at you at Ontario Wildlife Foundation.

I'm trying to encourage more bumblebees to nest on my property. any suggestions? I try to leave brush piles and leaves

And there sting sucks 10 times as much as a honey bee . And there hives can not be relocated nerly as successfully as honey bees they are a bit. More fragile to displacement sadly
