@ascedbyme: I drew this mental load map to better understand my wife, and when I showed it to her, she looked at it and said, “Yeah, that’s exactly it.” What stood out to me is that the mental load isn’t just a list of things to do. It’s multiple roles happening at the same time. Being a mom has a list. Being a wife has a list. Work has a list. And each of those lists has more lists underneath it. While she’s trying to be a good mom, she’s also trying to be emotionally available for me. While she’s trying to keep up at work, she’s also thinking about the house. While she’s taking care of everyone else, she’s often carrying dozens of things that never make it onto a calendar or a checklist. The biggest lesson for me wasn’t figuring out how to solve all of it. It was learning to acknowledge that it exists and finding ways to take ownership of some of those lists so she doesn’t have to carry them alone. Sometimes people don’t need you to fix everything. They just need to know you see what they’ve been carrying. If this resonates with you, check my Story Highlights and take the free Emotional Leadership Assessment to see where you’re at as an emotional leader in your household, and join The Household for more conversations like this.

HER :
please add herself as a bubble. bc she needs to prioritize herself. bc clearly no one else is. she needs her own time and self care and self love time too.

Can I add?? Taking a “task” off the list does nothing for the mental load unless you do it consistently. She will always hold the mental load of it until you have proven that you will do it fully and correctly consistently every time. If she has to remind you or question you about it it is still in her mental load.

Notice she’s not listed as a priority on any of these list. It’s much deeper than you can imagine, but at least you’re trying to understand. Please allow her space for herself, she deserves it.

Please if you help- don’t ask her for a list. Just look around and see what can be done.

Did you realize your map doesn’t include a space for herself? Just her? You listed every role except her being her own person.

My 2 cents… When you take a task (and bless you for that), take it entirely. For example, laundry. Make sure you have enough supplies for doing it without letting her manage the individual pieces of it. When it runs out, that’s on you. Also, learning how to do it her way would help. Like sorting colors, checking pockets, pre-treating stains, things that if not done properly, end up back on her plate which would have never been an issue if you took the time to learn her way. I’m guessing by now, she has an epic system that runs smoothly and would be willing to share it. You’re an awesome husband by taking the time to understand her physical and mental load!
